Walkout is the true story of a young Mexican American high school teacher, Sal Castro. He mentors a group of students in East Los Angeles, when the students decide to stage a peaceful walkout to protest the injustices of the public school system. Set against the background of the civil rights movement of 1968, it is a story of courage and the fight for justice and empowerment.

Probably more of a teaching aide than a film as such. Edward James Olmos steps behind the camera once more to tell the tale of the 1968 Chicano Blowouts. Michael Peña, playing real-life organizer Sal Castro, opens the film in his classroom, instructing his students and therefore the viewer about the power of who's writing history and telling one's own story. Given how little is known about the organized student walkouts among Mexican-American students and their allies in the late 1960s compared to other civil rights actions of the era, it's a point that's well-taken. Why does it still feel like Edward James Olmos is the only actor/writer/director in Hollywood that cares about Chicano history.
Nicely made movie about a issue I was unfamiliar with. The runtime was nearly 2 hours but the film didn’t drag. There were not many notable names in the cast but all did their parts well. Michael Peña was a perfect foil to Alexa Vega'a character. Worth a watch.

This movie really resonated with me because it clearly showed my exact reasoning for choosing the career path I chose. And while I feel proud to have chosen to go into college counseling as a career, It should be stressed that these events took place over 50 years ago and still so, so much more work needs to be done to promote equity in college access for Latinx and Black students in LA.
Also, being triggered by the police brutality in this made me realize how much I'd been affected by witnessing the same police violence at protests just this past Summer. Again this happened 50 years ago and we still have more work to do.

it’s crazy to think HIGH SCHOOLERS like 14-18 year olds mobilized for a huge cause and for their rights. 25% of chicanos graduated high school during that time. AND PEOPLE REALLY BELIEVE SYSTEMIC RACISM DOESNT EXIST😫 ugh I could write a whole essay on this (I did I wrote my thesis paper on it) shoutout to those students paving the path for me to graduate college
