I'm not a fan of Spielberg, but I am very partial to long sad movies. That being said, Schindler’s List was undoubtedly Spielberg’s best work and it was heartbreaking the whole way through. Spielberg still displayed his typical tendency towards simplistic historical narratives involving (white) saviors, but it was much tamer than usual, and I can’t really fault him for it when the rest of the film was very rich and tender.

Speed Racer 2008
A beautiful affirmation of art over profit. Royalton is a capitalist who wants to hollow out racing for profit. Speed rejects this and instead affirms self-expression and a pure love of racing. The visuals of the film reflect this theme. The Wachowksis poured so much love and creativity into what could have been a brainless nostalgia-baiting franchise film. Much like Matrix: Resurrections, the Wachowskis use film to criticize the pressures of the industry and assert their own creative voices.
