Second half was a little drawn-out but I cried during every musical number, even the happy ones, so my inner 16-year-old musical theatre kid isn’t letting me be an objective viewer about it. And neither, it turns out, is my inner lesbian.

Candyman 1992
It is a blessed condition… To live in other people’s dreams, but not to have to be.
The first half of this movie is top-tier. It’s headed by a woman who believes herself the protagonist, and who mistakes Black trauma for her own fun adventure to solve, recklessly turning it into a weapon in her hands as she Fucks Around and Finds Out. In becoming the victim of the Candyman though, Helen becomes the victim of the narrative, and the movie turns into a classic slasher with its initial themes muddled. An excellent score and Tony Todd’s gravitas more than make up for it, though.

Deep Blue Sea 1999
One star is for That One Death and the other is for the absolutely unmatched theme song.
