Although widely touted as a nod to Hitchcock, I would prefer to enjoy it without that particular extra-textual. In particular, that forced Bernard Herrmann score which was practically trying to trick you into believing you were watching Vertigo, felt tonally off for this movie and its style. It really belonged in a different movie and at times, actually took me *out* of the French New Wave film i was enjoying. Or maybe it was…
The title and poster fooled me into thinking this was going to be something of a swerve for Hashiguchi— a whacky comedy about gay dudes trying to have a baby. Should have known better— it was instead more of his standard humanism and quite lovely.
If you can only see one Hashiguchi, I would favor Like Grains.. or Slight Fever.. But this was also very nice.
