A strong directorial debut for Kendrick!
Using a non-chronological narrative of events isn't my favourite because it's not often done well--it can easily get confusing for the viewer, and unfortunately I have to say that's still the case here. Solid body horror flick with a veneer of Barbie-esque feminist talking points.
Though The Substance may not add anything new to the conversation, it's both entertaining and horrifying in equal measure. Legitimately cringed watching some of the scenes, and the acting is great all around.

I Saw the TV Glow 2024
I found the actual storytelling element (aka the plot) a bit convoluted (aka messy) for my liking but the characters, themes, cinematography and soundtrack (the film was already triggering a visceral reaction but the moment Tonight by The Smashing Pumpkins started playing I was like "oh it's so fucking Joever for me") more than made up for it.
