Solid body horror flick with a veneer of Barbie-esque feminist talking points.
Though The Substance may not add anything new to the conversation, it's both entertaining and horrifying in equal measure. Legitimately cringed watching some of the scenes, and the acting is great all around.
I found the actual storytelling element (aka the plot) a bit convoluted (aka messy) for my liking but the characters, themes, cinematography and soundtrack (the film was already triggering a visceral reaction but the moment Tonight by The Smashing Pumpkins started playing I was like "oh it's so fucking Joever for me") more than made up for it.

The plot alone would've made The 8 Show feel a little stale in the wake of Squid Game (and to an extent, Alice in Borderland), but the creative direction does A LOT of the hard work here in lifting up the overall quality of the show.
