Mildly embarrassing that this came out a year after Spring Breakers. Sauceless and cynical. 23 year old Emma Watson pretends to be a teenager from California surrounded by actual American children, which is jarring. Everybody else is like 17/18 in real life while Emma Watson is there as an adult trying to do a hack impression of preppy valley girls.
I’m sure everybody’s mom thought this movie was clever when it came out.

In 2012, if you were to call yourself a “fan” of this movie it would likely stem from the belief that this movie is “actually” or “secretly” or “surprisingly” intelligent, contrary to its marketing. This is because we falsely assume a correlation between intelligence and quality when appreciating art. I don’t believe that this movie is materially different from what trailers lead us to think. You could easily predict the general outcome of the narrative.
