    Moana 2

    ★★½

I haven’t seen Moana. I watched this with some students, so keep that context in mind. I certainly expect the prior film to be superior, but even I can feel this sequel is disappointing. There is seemingly nothing left about these characters to develop or explore. The characters get into danger and almost die, but — so what? This script feels like the kind of thing that would have gone straight to VHS a la an Aladdin sequel when I was…

    Mickey 17

    ★★★★

Even after some time has passed, I can’t quite make up my mind about Mickey 17, though I err on the side of calling it a success. It’s strange that it would be so packed with serious intentions, but also be so silly in tone — while also being entirely unfunny. I can’t discern whether this is purposeful or not. Elsewhere, certain themes or characters begin to develop but disappear just as quickly. These would feel more baffling if Bong…

    Outbreak

    ★★★

Outbreak is the story of a helicopter that breaks out in a remote village in Africa.  It’s so virulent it kills helicopters in only two days. Eventually, it finds its way via an exotic pet to the United States of Helicopters, where it mutates, making it more potent and easily transmissible between helicopters.  It can only be beaten by Dustin Helicopter who has to fly in a race against helicopters in a helicopter, to beat the helicopters.
This is not the smartest movie, but it’s fun to watch with a group.
    And it’s full of helicopters.

    The Legend of Cocaine Island

    ★★★½

A somewhat bewildering mixture of documentary and recreation — starring its real-life subject as an interviewee and an actor. But, the more I reflect on it, the more I feel like it worked. There are some occasional bizarre editing choices and inserts, but those things are quickly forgotten due to the strength of some of its central ‘characters.’ Andy, for instance, might be the funniest actual human being on this planet.
