So much happening here on so many levels. Hard not to be astonished by the risks and flourishes and just incredible knock out scene after scene. And as always, it’s the sound just as much as the image for Godard. He truly is an artist of making images and sound work, antagonize, recognize and play together.

And what does it all mean within the context of an ascending feminism at the time. Feels retrograde and true at the same time and tries so very hard to remind everyone of the feminine in feminism.

    A woman IS a woman.

Less the filmmaking and more the astounding acting performances and atmosphere, is why I love this movie. Emma Thompson, goodness and virtue personified. Kate Winslet, the evolution of spirit. Hugh grant, just such a wonderfully awkward comedic actor who has you hang on his every word. This is British excellence folks.

I found the love story within so moving and real. And also makes you want to read Keats … just lush. Don’t miss it. Jane campion is a master.

My ten year old son hated his summer camp and wanted to hang with me. So I said let’s go to the movies. And we watched this on the hottest afternoon in July at the film forum in New York on 35 mm. The cinema was packed. Rent control freaks everywhere. And really old people.

This is a great film. The compositions. Exquisite. Mifune, is the OG mensch. Some scenes :
