Interesting premise, some of the humour worked, some was a bit lame, entertaining enough for most of it’s runtime, the last 20 though was a real slog and a bit crap tbh resulting in the loss of half a star.

The filmmaking is fantastic. The period detail is great. I love Saiorse Ronan. I was kinda worried about the novelty casting of the Modfather but he’s perfectly good. Theres some nice scenes like the kids on the train, halfway through though it turns into Oliver Twist.

Good performances. It was incredibly powerful. The brutality of the people in charge in these type of movies makes me so angry, where these obvious sadists were placed in positions of authority. Think Scum but set in Jim Crow America from a black kids point of view. It’s a horrific but important story based on a novel which itself was based on a true story.

A lot to like, but a lot here I just didn’t understand the relevance of,…
