Great construction of atmosphere through carefully crafted and delightfully gothic details and shots, yet lacks a crucial engine for keeping the viewer hooked, which overall makes the movie slow and boring. The metaphorical power of vampire stories here feels like it’s absent, which at the end makes you feel like the movie hasn’t really gave you anything to take home. Excessively repetitive on the scenes with crazy Knock and not enough attention to the relationship between Orlok and Ellen, which feels sketched and rushed. Dafoe carried the movie - it felt like a breath of fresh air every time he talked.
