Egoyan’s best since… Chloe?
Lot of different angles to approach this one from. I am particularly drawn to its subtle commentary on the state of contemporary art and the sanitization/sanding down of transgressive themes/aesthetics. Feels particularly apt given the current climate of Canadian cinema.
Amanda Seyfried absolutely ate. Has perhaps the best line reading of recent memory: “you’re not just sucking him off… you’re CONSUMING him.”

Solid little Québécois dramedy that loses steam the longer it goes. Some excellent performances and dynamic long-takes. Makes the crucial mistake of eliding key narrative developments in the hopes of being “deep” and “ambiguous,” but ultimately feels underdeveloped.

My last film of the fest, and my oh my, what a send off this was.
To be fair, I think it is useful to brush up on some context going in (particularly about Burroughs’ personal life) because some key elements of the narrative are not explained at all. I’m sure this will throw off many people, but I respect the gumption to not overexpose. As a pure cinematic experience, this hits on so many levels.…
