I've heard people I respect talk about Soderbergh having great concepts but checking out on each halfway through, because he's already thinking about the next one, but I never really felt it until this film.

That may seem like a strange thing to say about a 4-star movie, but while I gave this the same star rating I gave Presence, I thought Presence was nearly everything it could have been, while this felt like something that could have been an…

A dive into an insular world made engaging by some thrilling original music and art direction, and by a don't-miss John Malavich performance that perfectly captures how someone can be charismatic and childlike and yet completely humorless.

The ensemble is fine, but doesn't measure up to other recent "you are invited" films like Glass Onion, and the plot has the usual horror movie quality of being interesting until it's not. But again in a film about art it's the art on display that kept me engaged long enough for the ending to save the film.

Crazy, stunning ultra-espionage film that starts amazing but can't keep up the impossible pace it sets for itself or figure out something to replace it. It's openly a film where things will only make sense in retrospect, but even then there are glaring inconsistencies and flaws. Unfortunately, a bunch of these revolve around the use of the Kat character, even though Elizabeth Debicki throws herself in and does some of the best emotional work in the film (aided perhaps by…

Has a deft touch with quickly drawing characters, but nothing they do or encounter is all that interesting, and then explanations make the mysteries less interesting still. Also would probably feel more original if Don't Breathe didn't exist. But at least it manages to never insult my intelligence, which may seem like a low bar but a lot of horror movies don't meet it.
