It honestly took me a moment to adjust to this film. I just watched Barry Lyndon and it was jarring to see a comedic period piece with these production values and hear American accents with powdered wigs. But as soon as I got acclimatized it was perfection for the remainder of the film.
The only criticism I have is about a short unessasry topless scene that I didn’t care for. The rest of this review will be me gushing about…

    Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Did yall see how Captain America literally kicked everyone in the movie? Kicked them so good. Like BAM. Front kick off the boat for you. BAM. Backwards flip kick for you.
I mean it's a perfect film for like other reasons (plot, characterization, themes, iconic action scenes, Robert Redford, eye-patch puns) but honestly, dem kicks is all you need.

Another fantastic movie I saw at CIFF 2024 that went unnoticed.

This has big Dumb and Dumber energy and I love it.
Shameik Moore and D’Arcy Carden have instant chemistry. Seriously, they need sequels to this, give them more money now.
Funny as hell, I was laughing throughout.

Best film I saw at CIFF 2024.
Made me cry. Barbie Ferreira and John Leguizamo should be given awards. I dug every part of this. So sweet, so wholesome, so sad.
If you haven't' seen this, find it and watch it.

    King Richard

    Not good. Some observations
    - I never got over how I'd rather be watching a movie about Venus and Serena instead of their dad
    - Will Smith is not believable and he sounds like he's mocking Richard with his performance, I know it's not his intention but it's what comes across
    - Zach Baylin's script is cliche, cheesy and overly sentimental without earning it
    - I wonder which of the inspirational Will Smith speeches will be used during his oscar…

  • The Red Suitcase

    The Red Suitcase

    ★½

Taken at face value, it's a perfectly fine little short with some tense moments. Unfortunate I don't watch films in a bubble and The Red Suitcase has the hallmarks of stereotypical and exploitative films about places like the Middle East, south-east Asia and Africa.

Oppressed women. forced marriages - check
    Scary bearded men - check
Removing headscarf to gain freedom - check
Running to a white country - check

Not for me. Its the kind of film that panders to a specific type of Western cinephile.
