This was pretty interesting to watch, though a bit more historically faithful in some ways than say The Crucible (though I enjoy the 1996 adaptation). I'm a weird person who can watch through a three hour movie and still stay engaged (thanks to the 1956 Ten Commandments film from when I watched it as a twelve year old).
I enjoyed watching Sophia Loren as Goody Nurse; she was wonderful. I also thought Kirstie Alley and Gloria Reuben were great, too.
Anne Bancroft in The Pumpkin Eater truly stole my attention with the way the film followed her as Jo facing off so many things about herself and the people around her, especially the men. I find that the moments where she struggles with aspects of Jo's mental health to be the most fascinating in coming to terms of her husband's adultery. I don't understand why this is heralded as a feminist film...it's not when the sexual politics of the film has the protagonist to be in not one, but two abusive relationships, especially when the love interest she ends up with more or less grooms her into the relationship via prostitution with piano lessons in mind.
It's just...more telling of where the film's priorities are when she, as a mother, cared a lot more about her love interest than she did…
First of all, as a Christian, I do appreciate the exploration of critiquing the prosperity gospel popularized in television & books. It is not a sensible gospel to live by as if being healthy and wealthy is the only way you know God favors you when the Bible says differently in various circumstances.
