No jokes aside, it’s simply astonishing how Radu Jude could pull this one off on the back of his expectably bonkers AI Dracula. Of course tackling the abyss of Romanian society is hardly a new topic but I’m firmly against the idea of pinning the film down on its local specifity and through this not seeing the universality and urgent timeliness of the story. This is the neorealism of today - shot on an iPhone.

I will call it out now: MASTERPIECE. Very much in the vein of Apichatpong, this is queer slow cinema in its most visceral form. And not just this, it is also a story about Vietnam, it’s war time past and economic present, intertwining and flowing freely, finding images and visions never seen before - from campy kink to spiritual archaeology, it is in all in there.

Oh my god, I know this film is as nichey as art-house-cinema can be, but I just cried from watching people eat a soup together.

With his astonishing tactile talent Bas Devos is definitely out there with the likes of Kelly Reichardt and Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

Also shout-out to the design of the credits, giving everybody the same space and highlighting film as a collaborative work shows how unpretentious the director is after all.
