Bong Joon-ho's latest is a brilliant mix of sci-fi and satirical comedy with a highly creative premise and lots of wonderful over-the-top near-anime performances.

It's very similar to his previous films "Snowpiercer" and "Okja", though not quite at that level, as there are some pieces that don't quite fit together (likely a result of studio interference), but overall one of the best films of 2025 so far.

Essentially, "The Monkey" is a comedy version of the "Final Destination" franchise and while it has great kills and gore galore, I really hoped that there would be a little bit more substance to it, to work in tandem with the black humor. While it was a wildly entertaining experience, the tone was a little to inconsistent to give a higher recommendation.

A solid spy thriller with a few good plot points, but fairly predictable and suffering from a lot of the problems shared by other post-blip MCU films, particularly the fact that the movie seems to be entirely about setting up the next movie instead of paying anything off.

Great performances, cinematography and score highlight one of the year's best films, a dark and at times nasty story about ego, repression and destructive personalities with one mother of an ending that re-contextualizes the entire film in a fascinating way.

A lock for a Best Picture nomination (and possible win) as well as for Director (Campion), Actor (Cumberbatch) and possibly Kirsten Dunst for Supporting Actress.
