A tale of a geppetto boy in a part of England that I suspect looks the same in 2022 as it did in 1955.
Evokes childhood in an almost dreamlike way by way of drifting in and out of scenes. The governing effects of religion and strict schooling are pronounced clearly. The music is a key character here and often amplifies the ideas conveyed by the images.
Plays like a reverie.
Chris Marker as a gaijin. Makes an Adam Curtis picture look totally coherent.
Punctuated by some insight, but for the most part rambles along pretentiously. In spite of the fact that this claims to be an essay on time and memory, these ideas are obfuscated by a frenetic and skittish style.
Can see how this was regarded as avant-garde / experimental back in the day; a lot of it comes off as obnoxious and heavy-handed.
