Might just be the years most quietly depressing films thanks to its brutally simplistic sound design, a fiercely emotional and stripped back performance from Joana Santos and a mortifying final act that really makes loneliness something tangible and dangerous.

To a Land Unknown 2024
There is something empty about everything taking place on screen as its leads chase a dream for different reasons but the idea of the dream doesn't provide any depth to these paper thin characters. While the story is there it isn't filled with people, instead ideas of people and that drags all empathy and emotion from the story entirely.

Alien: Romulus 2024
Romulus feels new and original when it gets started but it quickly becomes a film that seesaws between genuine homage and flagrant theft. As the film goes on its impossible not to notice the greatest hits approach to storytelling. The first half is Alien, the second Aliens and despite a unique use of gravity in one sequence and some decent performances, this feels shameless in just how closely it adheres to formula. Maybe my biggest disappointment of 2024.

It might just be David Fincher's ode to perfection and the way that he makes his films. His titular killer follows a strict approach and does everything repeatedly and methodically.
