Really, really excellent. I haven't seen the original and I did kinda think the showtunes were hokey but I love the like, conversational improv that the performers have in the music where they're kinda convincing each other of the choreography as they go along. The exaggerated lens flares were pretty distracting but the actual photography of it all was breathtaking, a playful camera, a dreamy sort of Michael Bay-ish colour pallet, far and above the best movie musical this century.

The Phantom Menace is an apt comparison because this does feel like an old man trying to make a movie that feels like it was made in the 1920s with no one around willing to tell him that's a terrible idea.
