The short films that this feature anthologizes completely saturated my psyche over the course of my childhood, which of course means that the added interstitial material feels jarring and counterfeit. But whatever. Still a top 5 Walt Disney animated feature.

Bluebeard's Eighth Wife 1938
I like this visual and verbal wit of this gloss on the Bluebeard tale — in some of my favorite moments, it seems to momentarily slip into the idioms of silent comedy, deploying an unexpectedly potent intertitle here, an oddly soundless visual gag there. Colbert is a whirlwind of charm, which nearly overcomes her lack of chemistry with Cooper's erratic, inscrutable character.

It's nice to see a comedy in 2023 that is this much of a movie. There's so much slapstick, so many sight gags, such expressive performances, immaculate production design, even honest-to-goodness dance choreography. Where the humor is primarily verbal, it splits the difference between the kind of eternally charming dumbness of something like Zoolander or Bill & Ted and an extremely-online flippancy which will date it irrevocably in a couple decades' time if not sooner.

As someone who's seen the X-Files probably a thousand nondistinct times, it's hard to parse this as anything besides a weird dream Agent Mulder had, but you know what, I'm happy for him. It's a little broad, a little corny, it's trying way too hard to make your Catholic mom cry, but who cares, it's about a big Irish-Italian family and it's wholesome and romantic as anything.
