    Queer

    ★★★★

Queer is a movie that will most certainly divide the audience. It's not all that it's marketed to be while simultaneously being more than it was marketed. The heavy symbology and metaphors are dream-like and make, upon first impact, little to no sense. Upon diving deeper into the meaning of it all and discussing every single aspect with my husband, I discovered there is so much more than meets the eye.

This is definitely one of Guadagnino's most experimental films…

I've been holding space for this adaptation for over 10 years now. I'm glad to report that it was definitely worth it.

I really had my reservations when they announced the casting for this. Grande as Glinda did not sit well with me. Also, the first trailer looked way too artificial to seem genuine. But then the release date drew nearer, bizarre press interviews happened and some controversy regarding Erivo caused some concern.

But when the movie started and I…

    Sidonie in Japan

    ★★★

Isabelle Huppert plays a writer still mourning the untimely death of her husband. Reluctantly, she takes a flight to Japan to do publicity for the reprint of her new book. In this land of ghosts and cherry blossoms, she learns to open herself up and leave her traumatic life behind.

This is a very sober, dreamlike film with a beautiful message. Japan is portrayed very scenically and serene, and director Élise Girard knows how to make a film visually appealing.…

    Your Monster

    ★★★★

Your Monster is for the most part a very enjoyable romantic comedy with some horror elements at the end. What immediately stands out is the great performance by Melissa Barrera who once again steals the show. Her chemistry with co-star Tommy Dewey is endearing and makes for a delightful interaction between the two. Their sense of humor is spot on and they are just fun to watch together. Where the film falls a bit short is by the third act.…

    The Boy and the Heron

    ★★★★½

This must be one of the most tranquil movies I have ever seen in a theatre with the most restless audience. Constant shuffling around, snacking on chips, whispering and fidgeting. Other than that I had a completely wholesome experience.

The Boy and the Heron is a fantastical tale that takes you on a journey to a new and exciting, albeit troublesome, world. The story is quite familiar but there is so much beauty to be found that you don't mind.…

    The Substance

    ★★★★★

What can I say about The Substance that hasn't already been stated? I really don't know, so I'll just tell you a little story:

When we were preparing our program for FilmFest Gent, The Substance was an absolute veto for me. My husband could argue as much as he wanted, I had to see it. He himself has a love-hate relationship with the horror genre. Much-discussed genre films are often disappointments for him; with him it's all about depth, underlying…
