  Fascinating, if not deeply moving or revelatory, I think a little more narrative cohesion/pursuit of loose threads would’ve really pushed this to full marks for me (the mother, the Commandant’s ?illness?, perhaps a look at the family after the war).

  As a big fan of Broadway adaptations of some popular movies (Shrek? KILLER. Legally Blonde?! OMG u guyz!!!), I came into this hopeful that it would bring the same energy, but when the very opening number was incredibly lackluster, performed by, hate to say it, a bland protagonist, it didn’t bode well.   Lighting and set design highly evocative, characters are realistic and portrayed beautifully, and the story is incredibly moving. Not generally the type to willingly rewatch movies, but I’d rewatch this one. A new favorite.
