This was a very dissonant experience.
WHAT I LIKED
Technicals were pretty good honestly. Blocking, lighting, editing, tempo, musical form. It’s walking the walk.
Saldaña (ridiculously miscast accent aside) delivers a great performance that I’d say could be her best, at least within the last decade. (She had no reason whatsoever to be playing Nina Simone.) She brings range and compassion and that translated.
There are peaks of wholesome moments that creep through the story and while small and sparse,…
