a delightful watch! i thoroughly enjoyed the comedic elements and those little tardigrade creeper guys. mark ruffalo’s clear trump impression, the red hats, literally expending the poor/lower classes….a bit too obvious for me but hey, that’s bong’s signature. however! the parody of religious influence in government was great.
overall, a fun watch. ultimately a bit forgettable for me, compared to bong joon ho’s other works, but fits well in his oeuvre.
i actually listened to the ost before watching the movie. "the girl in byakkoya" <3 i want to live inside that song. did y'all know this soundtrack was one of the first to use a vocaloid?? so cool. so, knowing the music before watching was fun to see how it paired up with the narrative. so vibrant, whimsical, horrifying at times, really enjoyed it!
chloe zhao is incredible.
i was in tears 20 minutes in, and that's pretty much how i was for my entire viewing. i love films that depict these little slices of life and how everyone is on their own journey, figuring things out at our own paces. such a masterful blending of fiction/reality like in the rider. this is definitely going on my list of comfort films.
sidenote: also i just love how much chloe zhao loves my home state. frances mcdormand working at wall drug, insane. i cried seeing the 80ft dino. maybe i'll take a road trip back home someday.
