a silly and sweet time that occasionally delves into eldritch horrors beyond our understanding. my soul needed the experience of watching this at an empty matinee and getting a free poster.
simon stålenhag's book is an atmospheric, poetic and understated story, situated somewhere between blade runner and cormac mccarthy's "the road". when i found out it was getting adapted a few years ago, i was excited about the prospect, but honestly after some time i kinda forgot it was happening. all this is to say that it's good thing i wasn't hyped, because this is awful.
the russo brothers assembled a cluttered, fumbling 320 million dollar mess and are audacious enough…
nothing better than a movie where every word that comes out of every person's mouth is completely fucking stupid.
i feel tremendous sympathy for the creature. there's something in his graceful way of swimming about to the modest underwater arcadia he knows too well. the humans came and messed it all up for him. he probably didn't even know what loneliness was until he saw that woman swimming and he bristled beneath her, ever so timidly reaching towards her feet. of course he wanted to take her back to his grotto, that place is glorious!
it's tragic, really.
