Hating looking at this movie but loved the crackerjack plot and way it pulled so much of my interests in one taut twisty thriller

No subtext left unexcavated, glaaaaaaacially paced and a horrible Mark Ruffalo performance outweigh the bright slots. This movie cried out to be zippy and fun and then hit you but it just unspooled limply instead. Three stars for great concept/story and Robert Pattinson.

You can (maybe should) shoot on 35, you can make your film look good (and this film by and large does) but you absolutely cannot start your movie with a card announcing how special you are for doing so. Also if you decide to make “twisty” thriller you really need to be more clever since it was obvious what the twist was from the introductory voice over.

What a film should do is contain an absolutely over-the-top breakfast making montage. Best food on film since The Taste of Things! That gives you an extra star when the film is otherwise bereft of ideas

Reminds me of In the Mood for Love, the doomed connection of two people who meet at the wrong time, focused on the wrong people. The central conceit of the ambiguous modern setting is genius but also not overbearing, works perfectly to tie today’s rise in fascism and oppression to the past’s.

Also, after this and Undine I think I’m a bit obsessed with Franz Rogowski. What a phenomenal talent.
