Five stars to counter the negativity toward this movie - because that’s what I’m here for, positivity! Look, The Alto Knights admittedly fits perfectly within my comfort zone (mid-budget studio crime dramas by respected filmmakers). And the dual lead performances by Robert De Niro are, for me, not just the selling point of the film, but further proof that my favorite actor is always trying something new and taking risks - at 81 years old!
My advice to filmgoers is…
Despite having seen this movie numerous times, every scene has an unpredictability that makes me question if I really know what’s coming next. It’s that vitality, combined with a warm familiarity, that makes Wonder Boys one of my favorites.
SXSW 2023 - Michael Lukk Litwak’s first feature is an absolute blast! I’m in awe of this kind of meticulous world-building, and I found myself immediately invested in Molli and Max’s future as a couple. The film does the romantic comedy genre proud.
Also, the practical effects here are so much more pleasing to the eye than the copious amounts of ugly CGI splattered across tentpole movies. Everything feels tangible and real, and I guarantee you the effects will age better than most movies overloaded with millions of dollars of VFX. Go Litwak and team!

New York Film Festival screening at Alice Tully Hall. Good lord, how I loved this film. What can I even say? The shortest 3 1/2 hours of my life. My heroes banded together for a masterpiece.
