wants so badly to replicate the funny/dark tone of Black Mirror, but its humour is so edgeless, its writing clumsy, and its casting so completely flat, that it doesn't even scrape the bottom level of the worst BM episodes. also i'm INCREDIBLY sick of gay men being used as comedic bestie side characters, and sexual violence being used as a lazy plot device.

The question shouldn't be 'HOW did they make a movie out of Lolita?' but 'WHY'? There is so much wrong with this adaptation, which completely misses the point of the book and frames Humbert as some kind of lovable buffoon caught in a farcical situation. Why was this made? I can't see any reason other than 'it's a film so we can add boobs'. Baffling, badly written and exploitative on many levels. One star awarded to Angelo Badalamenti, though for the gorgeous soundtrack!
