sorkin can be so good and so bad, sometimes in the breadth of a couple of lines, it’s remarkable how much his talent (quick wit, sharp dialogue) routinely runs up against his worst instincts (insane fealty to every government institution). here it’s like perfect 50/50 ratio of both, by chicago 7 it’s 10% good lines, 90% somber shots of flags.
remember watching this at 11 or 12 and thinking it was unlikely a food critic would give their verdict on a dish on first bite, and indeed particularly to a waiter. didn’t think it would still hamper my enjoyment of the film 18 years later, but there we are.
watched at the prince charles amongst an audience that acted like they were at a screening of “the room”. shame that all things big/baroque struggle to translate nowadays- this is a film that is quite conscious that it’s being ridiculous at points (and some of the film is just flat out weird, particularly the ending) because you have to risk being ridiculous to reach for beauty. and this is a beautiful film.
outrageously good fun. huston and bening - performing on levels few can reach. great score as well.
