    Are you fucking kidding me?

Can we please stop celebrating this regurgitated garbage?

I've seen this same movie a million times before. We all have. Presenting yet another origin story and franchise reboot, a race to the end credits, complete with the obligatory post-credits sequel tease, ultimately leaving the impression that for the past hour and half you've been watching little more than an extended trailer. An advertisement for the next movie. Only this is far far worse than I…

A sci-fi/fantasy/western/apocalyptic hybrid with Shakespearean theatrics and Anderson's typically glorious B-movie-esque action sequences? You don't need me to tell you it's just yet another banger from arguably the most consistently creative director working today.

What critics are likely to overlook (to my endless frustration) is once again how emotionally motivated Anderson's political commentary is here. In the Lost Lands draws thematic and iconographic parallels to the Resident Evil series, clueing us into the filmmaker's loftier dramatic intent, and expounds upon…

Looked absolutely glorious in 35mm. How Bigelow made a gothic Western-horror hybrid with the unmistakable melancholy of the synthwave 80s all while expounding upon the dreadful existentialism inherent in the vampire mythos for a modern setting without succumbing to the overindulgent rot of other likeminded genre experiments just, like, amazes me. Plus its sly environmentalist agenda beautifully marries with the bloodlustful plotting and duplicitous romanticism of the American south. Incredible fucking movie that I somehow was underrating for so long (and it's one of my very favs!!).

In which Eggers demonstrates a total lack of understanding of the source material, completely loses narrative focus, and drenches the film in such self-seriousness that the effect ought to be laughable if it wasn't so fucking boring. Orlok is an icon in Murnau's epochal original, simultaneously menacing and pitiful; here, he has the cadence of a Star Wars villain. All bark, no bite. Eggers double dips the imagery in dour gloom. "When will this insufferable darkness end?" someone asks…

    "By healing, you resist oppression."

Is a camera a weapon? a shield? an excuse? When does one determine the proper time to extract meaning from documented events? When the lens is busted, is the spirit cracked? in need of mending? Cameras are replaceable; but lives are not. When does a protest prove futile in its efforts?

This is a cyclical account of the oppressed pushing back against their oppressors in any lawful way possible. But what good is abiding by…
