Central Station 1998
Between this and I’m Still Here, Walter Salles appears to have an act for crafting such emotionally moving character dramas. Central Station in particular has some very resonant themes. Walter Carvalho’s cinematography is elegant while Antônio Pinto & Jaques Morelenbaum’s musical score is stunning. Although the chemistry between Fernanda Montenegro and Vinícius de Oliveira really is the heart and soul of it all. The former especially gives such a master class performance. Easy to see why Glenn Close felt she was robbed of the Oscar win in ‘98 (even if I agree with Montenegro that it should’ve gone to Cate Blanchett).

Good Night, and Good Luck. 2005
Good Night, and Good Luck is nothing groundbreaking, but it’s solid. Very well acted by everyone in the cast. The pacing is very tight within such a tight runtime. Despite Aaron Sorkin having nothing to do with this movie, it still almost feels like something he would easily tackle.

Mr. & Mrs. Bridge 1990
As someone who personally found other Merchant Ivory productions to be mostly fine, I enjoyed Mr. & Mrs. Bridge more than I expected. The whole thing is very well acted. Real-life married couple Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward naturally play a married couple so elegantly. The third act is the most emotional (even if it does end abruptly). I’m glad to have read about how James Ivory would like to see this get a reevaluation because it deserves one.

Little Women 2019
I'm not too familiar with the story of LITTLE WOMEN. I've never read the original novel, though I have seen both the 1994 version and a local production of the 2005 Tony nominated stage musical adaptation years ago. Yet, I was completely won over by Greta Gerwig's fresh interpretation of this classic story.
Much has already been said about the unconventional narrative this movie follows, but I think those familiar with the plot will still find surprises along the way.…
