Aside from the cinematography and performances from Joaquin and Gaga, this was pretty disappointing. It brings up interesting issues about cult of personalities but doesn’t explore any of them well. The musical scenes halt the pacing dead in its tracks. They either should’ve leaned into the musical scenes completely and embraced the campiness or just dropped those scenes entirely. Didn’t care for the Joker-Harley relationship either. By the end, this film was just unnecessary.

The Truman Show 1998
Jim Carrey is a national treasure. It could’ve been so easy to write Truman as a one-note naive buffoon but Carrey brilliantly conveyed the character’s humanity beneath his whacky shenanigans. A beautiful depiction of the indomitable human spirit and a damming critique of the way we consume media.

Eraserhead 1977
That was really weird but I kinda liked it. I imagine I’ll be saying that a lot more as I delve into the world of David Lynch.

The Florida Project 2017
Bobby is a better man than I am. This film was absolutely infuriating for most of the runtime but there were always moments of humanity sprinkled throughout that made the final act so devastating. Gorgeous cinematography and props to Sean Baker for bringing out such amazing performances, especially in the child actors.
