Critically speaking, it's not a ground breaking film by any means, but the performances of Laura Dern and Jack O'Donnell together were electric. The emotional experience of this movie is palpable and where the movie shines. The themes of the movie were powerful and effective. Some themes and points were more on-the-nose than others. Ultimately, a very thought-provoking film. I spent much time reflecting afterwards. Don't expect anything other than a nihilistic, grim, and depressing story. I feel it's an important film for a therapist to see (consider empathy v compassion, the human condition, and the existential search of meaning through life's suffering).
The story was compelling and I enjoyed the psychological elements. Exploration of complex grief, trauma bonds, and family systems coping through loss and unimaginable circumstances were all highlights. Performances were believable and on point. I think the overall storytelling (though creative and interesting,) was under-developed and there were certain sequences that could have been hashed out more.
It was a fun movie to watch with family :)
Just rich people doing rich people shit.
I thoroughly enjoyed this film.
Hot and sexy as hell. Pretty awesome and intense in a lot of ways, but a little anticlimactic when it was all said and done.
