Compelling. Fun. Great performances (Hugh Grant especially). Scary at moments. I enjoyed a decent little breakdown/analysis of theology's common threads (cross-cultural use of organized religion to control the population). A lot of this was great. I feel it kind of dropped off a bit in the third act. Also, there were some plot holes that keep me from rating this higher.
Critically speaking, it's not a ground breaking film by any means, but the performances of Laura Dern and Jack O'Donnell together were electric. The emotional experience of this movie is palpable and where the movie shines. The themes of the movie were powerful and effective. Some themes and points were more on-the-nose than others. Ultimately, a very thought-provoking film. I spent much time reflecting afterwards. Don't expect anything other than a nihilistic, grim, and depressing story. I feel it's an important film for a therapist to see (consider empathy v compassion, the human condition, and the existential search of meaning through life's suffering).
Just rich people doing rich people shit.
I thoroughly enjoyed this film.
Hot and sexy as hell. Pretty awesome and intense in a lot of ways, but a little anticlimactic when it was all said and done.
