Incredibly subjective reviews with a hint of objective appreciation, whatever I think that means.

The Secret World of Arrietty 2010
Such a cute little film in the classic Ghibli mode. They have a lot of fun with the scale of it all, and as usual the food is just intoxicating.

Novocaine 2025
Indiana Jones. John McClane. Ash Williams. Jackie Chan. Novocaine?
There is something so engaging about a hero who gets his ass handed to him again and again and just KEEPS GETTING UP. Novocaine is that concept pushed to the absolute extreme.
It’s gross, it’s hilarious, it’s action-packed. A few too many of the action beats were spoiled by the trailer, but the twists still hit, and I was no less engaged in the journey. Hollywood’s good boy Jack Quaid is on a roll and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
If Quaid never gets to play Max Payne, I’m glad we at least got this.

Black Bag 2025
A fairly tense and playful cats-and-mice spy thriller. The balance between the loyal-yet-cold central performances and the flaky-yet-fiery supporting cast is an interesting take on the personal lives of secret agents, but also can make it a bit challenging to engage with. Spies will be spies, I suppose.
It’s hard to fault a twisty espionage plot for being difficult to follow, when as much as I love them, they all usually do. But damn, did I get lost around the early third act.

The Music Man 1962
(Comedy Bang Bang Watchalong)
It’s bombastic, it’s ridiculous, and the songs range from Shirley Jones (great!) to li’l Ronny Howard (adorable, but yeesh).
Bing Lujo is really onto something, a lot of the dancing looks like they’re making fun of the concept of dancing. The moved are great, but it’s a hilarious lens to watch it through.
