I like humanity, humor, and the suspension of disbelief
Favorite Directors: Robert Altman, Wes Anderson, Alfred Hitchcock, Eric Rohmer
I didn’t think a Coen was capable of making something this bad
I get that it’s trying to go for a b-movie vibe, but the tone is never quite right to make it enjoyable. It feels shabbily constructed: the plot is like a less interesting version of Burn After Reading, and the criminal buddies are a weaker version of the duo from Fargo. The transitions just annoyed me. All the performances other than the two leads seemed phoned in (why did they pay for Pascal and Damon???).
I’m definitely much harsher on it because I know the high potential of a Coen movie
You’re my dream
Basically Ladybird for middle school boys, and I’m not complaining. Also borrows a page from something like Superbad in its hilarious and shockingly realistic dialogue. Chris is caught up in new waves of enthusiasm that ultimately fade for the next thing. This feeling of never knowing which direction your future will take is so essential to growing up. It turns out all Chris really wants is unconditional love.
I found some of this painfully relatable as a former middle-schooler…
Hold on to your butts
Greatest detail is Nedry’s shaving cream can getting covered with mud. The knowledge of what truly happened dies with him, swallowed up by the earth just like the dinosaurs.
The sheer joy of Alan and Ellie seeing the dinosaurs for the first time is enough to make a man cry. Then the T-Rex jeep scene and the raptors in the kitchen are both perfect movie magic.
Jon Hammond is a low-key horrifying man because of his boyishness and disregard for human life
You’re freezing my soul
I love that you get to see everything in this that other westerns don’t show: people eating nasty food, drinking nasty drinks, farting, going to brothels, walking everywhere, and being very very very lonely.
Every frame of this could and should be framed. The movie also has a great sense of bizarre humor, like Mrs Miller stuffing her face and the guy who shaved his beard.
