I understand why this is mistaken for being sweet and gentle, but this is Patty Chayefsky we're dealing with. This movie's got venom.
Chayefsky's sympathy with Marty ends the moment he leaves the ranks of the pathetically lonely and embraces the possibility of real love, immediately becoming another nagging twat tormenting his friend for being single.
