The Child is Father of the Man. But that adult still has that child in them. A quietly devastating film, searching for meaning and finding more questions. Thankfully it’s very funny as we observe these lonesome people, sometimes from afar or reflected (especially when it’s too painful to watch them up close), connecting and isolated in a Taiwan (& Japan) shot like a modern Edward Hopper painting. The fine details of life accumulate into a sublime film, filled with magic and profundity, warmth and love. A humanist masterpiece.
