As someone who is studying philosophy in graduate school, raised LDS, been in and out and back in the church, people have been constantly asking me my opinion on this, so there y’all go— I finally watched it.
I thought the film opened pretty strongly— showing a strong command of Mormon concepts. Aside from the strange first scene, the missionaries’ banter felt shockingly realistic; the actresses performances were excellent—it felt like they were playing people I could’ve grown up with.…
I thought it was decent. Beautifully shot. Surprisingly shallow —didn’t have much substance to it. (They quote the Bible like, once? The story could’ve been told about any religious institution— didn’t need to be Catholic) Also very clearly told from the liberal point of view. The plot twist came out of left field but I didn’t think it ruined the movie.
The two strongest aspects were the atmosphere and performances— Fiennes’ great acting and the cinematography created a good sense of intrigue. I definitely enjoyed it but didn’t think it was amazing.
the world felt smaller in this one than what little I remember of the book or in the first part. I don’t know exactly why that is, but I guess part of that probably has to do with how they portrayed emperor shaddam. I also think that the end happened too quickly.
the visuals— both how Denis visualizes the world and its tech along with the color and cinematography—remains the strength of the movie

I watched this movie for the first time during a highschool conference where I stayed at a hotel for 3 days. It was almost a year and a half ago.
