Capitalism bad. Imperialism bad.
The themes are big and bold and, overall, that works just fine. But the movie does get shaggier and shaggier as it goes on. I have a feeling the shagginess could be an asset on future rewatches, but on first go-round it seemed to lose some steam in the back half.
Not quite sure what the point of this was. And that's really never been something I've wondered about any other Errol Morris film.
Turning Lanthimos' idiosyncratic wit and gaze on a historical tale is an interesting experiment that mainly pays off as a portrait of how all politics is personal. The ensemble is stellar and the filmmaking is unsurprisingly impressive.
