For the most part rather faithful to the (incredible) novel, but unfortunately the story and themes just don't work as well on the screen. While in the book the postmodern absurdity plays as manic and profound a la Charlie Kaufman, the film trends more silly, distracting from the brilliance of the underlying messages.
As poignant as the best Pixar, with much more overt and bleak politics. The decision to set this in fascist Italy is actually brilliant, and only strengthens the central story.
A visually stunning, pensive slow burn with a great central performance. People might call it scattered and incomplete, but I enjoyed how the film gives you space to breathe. It gives you the choice of putting the pieces together yourself, or leaving them apart.
