  I was roughly this age in the mid 90s, skateboarded, and have a soft spot for coming-of-age flicks. So, yeah, target audience. But I liked it a lot. Felt sweet and funny and, like, an authentic look at male friendships at that age. Plus, great music.

  Completely subjective take: I feel like I understand the cultural significance of this movie and can certainly appreciate how painstakingly, artfully shot it is. But this feels like a film I “should” watch rather than one I really enjoyed. Just don’t find it super moving on a gut, emotional level.

  Visually, a beautiful film. Cinematography feels ahead of its time. And a compelling story. The portrayal of the Japanese colonel feels a tad, er, racist so many years later, and that was tough to overlook for me. But overall v good.
