Can we coin COVIDcore? Low-budget hoomegrown affairs that came out of a desire to be creative despite limited resources and a total lack of conventional avenues? Yeah, well, I don’t find the products that came out of this movement terribly compelling.

Its clearly-scripted emotional beats? Especially rough.

    Mickey 17

    ★★★½

Mickey 17 is lacking in a lot of departments: depth, subtlety, novelty. Its satire is broad to the point of meaningless. Character goes a long way, though: a $100 million-plus film with this much personality is a rarity. The players are game too: there's not a weak link in the entire cast. Renner's Trumplander hybrid was consistently hilarious.

I am still not in love with Bong's brand of sci-fi, but this is his best outing in the genre to date.

It would be foolishness to try to formulate any kind of meaningful thought about BR2049 under an hour after the credits start rolling.

But this is the Tarkovsky-like masterpiece that I've known has been in Villeneuve this entire time. I was in awe for all 164 minutes. And that ending... Science fiction rarely reaches that kind of emotional depth.

Okay. I've said my piece. It's time for me to shut up.
