Perhaps i wasn't in the right mood, perhaps i'd built it up too much or perhaps it simply hasn't aged well, but I wasn't a big fan of this.
If i'd watched this as a 15 year old in the 90s, then i'm sure it would have hit 4/5 stars - there is a lot of violence and some classic one-liners that teenage Joe would have been happy to quote, but as a weary 38 year old it's fallen down…
Probably the answer I give when people ask "What is your favourite film?"
A pleasure to see it on the big screen, and an even bigger pleasure to have a Q&A with Shane Meadows himself afterwards.
An iconic piece of British Cinema that has stood the test of time and still brings a tear to my eye.
What a soundtrack too.
So good.
An affecting, thought-provoking and ultimately tender love story that had me gripped throughout.
Some of the animal husbandry is a tough watch and initially i thought Gheorge and his lovely face deserved better, but i was rooting for them both in the end.
You could probably predict the narrative, but there is more here too - the pro imigration subtext, the stunning scenery, and ultimately the feeling of hope it exudes.
Very good.
Not sure how I'm pushing 40 and never managed to watch this despite the plot/cast being right in my wheelhouse!
Needless to say, I thought it was a masterpiece... sexy, beasty and an acting masterclass all round (Kingsley especially). Big shout out to the 89 minute runtime too!
So good.
