I don't find myself as bowled over by this as most although I almost feel guilty for saying that as I know that its heart is very much in the right place. It makes some hugely important points and has interesting insights into the antecedents and consequences of so called toxic masculinity. Weirdly, the strength of this is also the weakness. Hugely enjoyable doc that is happy to just revel in the joy of Parr's work and genial persona without attempting to dig an inch deeper. Funny and fun, it doesn't innovate in terms of filmmaking but who cares?

A small film that turns out pretty big, a funny film that turns out pretty serious and a light film that turns out pretty dark. Beautiful, atmospheric direction that makes you feel you're really living in a remote Irish community in the 1920s. Superb, understated performances from every single cast member from the leads to the smallest make it completely immersive. A clever, funny, real and tender script makes every moment a joy. Even the soundtrack is perfect. A seemingly effortless exploration of friendship, mortality and the urge to leave something behind; I completely loved it.

There's zero innovation in the direction but it's unimaginative approach does at least allow the excellent acting of the entire cast to shine through. The writing is good and it was well paced.
