  amanda seyfried is underrated—what a compelling performance! hawke overindulges "repression". the visual style/cinematography (which were clearly directorial decisions) took me out. schrader's insistence on this constricting style ruined all the performances for me—every scene felt brutally result-directed to the point of dogma. more on dogma: writing was overly preachy. felt like schrader was lecturing me the whole time—not only about religion, corporate greenwashing, unfettered youth, and lonliness, but also about cinema. sigh
