This movie was a very strange experience for me. I'm not that well-versed in Mel Brooks films; I expected this one to be much more of a farce. What I got instead was a rather dour yet compelling look at destiny, and whether or not our futures are laid out for us. Sure, there are funny scenes - the blind man particularly stands out, as does the out-of-nowhere rendition of "Puttin on the Ritz" - but Simmons plays his Frankenstein's…

The Holiday 2006
A wonderful film, even if the movie doesn't understand how much more compelling the American story is than the English one. Jude Law's character never quite seems consistent, though the movie makes a good try at reconciling his behavior pre- and post- his big reveal. Cameron Diaz does her job, but outside of her big emotional payoff moment, I wish her and Law were just cut out of the movie (leaving the phone call scene in, though!).
Really the stars…

Interstellar 2014
I caught most of this again for the first time since I saw it in theaters, and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I like how the movie is a reflection on loneliness and how far we'll go to save ourselves from it. I wanted more out of the earthbound story, but that might have been a result of me missing the beginning.
While I think I get the point of the ending a little bit more, it still remains the inaugural winner of the Interstellar award for movies that would be better if they ended earlier.Translated from by -
Nefarious 2023
I was kinda underwhelmed by this film. I enjoyed the concept, and thought that the writing was excellent, but most of the parts that I think were supposed to be the greatest parts fell flat for me. I enjoyed hearing Nefarious speak about the Fall, but I've heard better from Monsignor Shea. It also felt like it was marking off a bingo card of Catholic buzzwords (ouija boards, abortion, euthenasia). But heck, any film that can stay enthralling based on dialogue in one room gets my approval.
