The fever-dream-murder-comedy subgenre is one I need to see more of
It's an absurd premise that requires some visual leaps of faith from the audience against technical limitations (no American Werewolf in London style transformation here), but as an allegory it works and the movie finally gels as an adaptation of a stage play once it settles in to a single location for its second half and speedruns through the end of civilization brought upon by complacency, capitulation, and conformity, and the last sane man in the world loses his mindβ¦
I'd forgotten how harrowing navigating a house at night could be as a kid. Traveling from your bedroom to the basement to play videogames or vice versa late at night on a weekend and everyone else is asleep, you had to know where every useful light switch was, be ready to bolt at any moment especially when you're turning lights back off, and be constantly vigilant against malevolent entities and impish ghouls that 100% watched you from just out ofβ¦
