Michael Mann is an underrated genius. The film has beautiful shot compositions, scenes that impeccably tie in thematic metaphors (the tiger scene is breathtaking), and a score that places the viewer immediately within the world. Brian Cox's Lecter is much more subtle than Hopkins, but just as unsettling in his demeanor.

The Return of the Living Dead 1985
An extra half star awarded for just being a silly good time. Some smart zombie stuff is hidden in this seemingly dumb film. These zombies are critical thinkers: they move fast, can communicate their desire for BRAINS, have superb motor functions, and call for backup on police radios to get more victims. They definitely don't make 'em like this anymore!

The best romantic comedy that gets to the heart of that quintessential question: can men and women be just friends? The answer is clearly no, as Harry and Sally attempt it for one year and end up in bed together. Look for Meg Ryan's small but charming break in character as she tries to keep up with Billy Crystal's impressions (Reiner, off-screen, encourages her to play out the scene and it's perfect!). This is a must-view every New Year's Eve, whether you have someone to kiss at midnight or not. Follow it up with Casablanca and you have the perfect romantic double feature.

It's hilarious, Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman have really great rapport, the songs are so bad they're good (and it's SUPPOSED to be that way), it's got a sense of adventure and tells a unique story (something severely lacking in American cinema today) AND Charles Grodin (a bonus to any…
