I do not understand how someone watches this film and does not immediately think this should be a Best Picture nominee. The sheer power and expressiveness on Domingo's face during each close-up is a wonder.

Still holds up! Never appreciated the campiness as much as I did this watch, but it really strikes a great balance between being an engaging, general audience movie, and something that a kid could enjoy.
But also Will Turner's hat at the end is atrocious.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest 2006
I actually forgot just how good this movie is. Sure, it’s a link to At World’s End, but it is really damn funny! It’s clear that the cast/Verbinski/writers have become comfortable with their characters and it shows in the dialogue, random glances, and eccentricities (“I have a jar of dirt!”). While it may lack some of the mystique of Pearl, it far exceeds it in humor and set pieces (that ridiculous wheel duel? those bone cages?).

A surprisingly riveting film with all three main actors delivering superb performances (Bates in particular was a knockout). Definitely Eastwood’s best film in many years.
